Google Launches Its G1 Phone: Iphone Beware!

Google wants to open a new front in the land of the mobile telephones with the first that works with its “Android” software. Its greater attractive is the open code, which enormously lowers the costs to the manufacturers. This first device, known as the Google Phone, is a product of the Taiwanese HTC, wants to shade the Apple iPhone or the Blackberry in the land of the mobile communication. The popularity of the Google brand name and the benefits of the price of 199 dollars could be the keys.
The project is very ambitious and HTC has gained an enviable position next to Google in their jump to the mobile communications, a technological landmark that had been awaited for a long time. HTC has a great presence in the market and its models are very popular; although until this moment it had been in the shade in the West, manufacturing for other companies like Compaq or Palm.

One of every six smart phones sold in first half of this year in the United States was made by HTC although they did not use this name, according to the consultant Nielsen Mobile. Now, the Google Phone, known as the T-Mobile G1, could be its luxury business card. The head of HTC marketing explained on the comparisons with the sector giants like Apple or Research in Motion: “We are far from being there”. They face the problem of not having its own software to develop the mobile devices, as it does happen with iPhone or Blackberry. Until the moment, HTC mobiles have used different versions of Windows Mobile. HTC are the people in charge of the first “smart phone” based on Windows, the Orange SPV, which was distributed in Europe. On its part, Google does not make mobiles but web pages and online services.
The union of both companies took place two years ago, when they began thinking about the T-Mobile G1 or the Google Phone. So far T Mobile has the exclusivity being the G1 cell phone provider company.
Google wants that its “Android” software to become the standard within “smart phones”. The G1 could be the “Trojan horse”. For this reason it has enticed operators and manufacturers to join its side, using the nature of the open code of “Android”, which will enormously lower the price of the costs, as the main argument.

As far as the design of the G1 goes, it will follow the present canons, it has a tactile screen of great dimensions. In addition, it will incorporate a “touchpad” in the inferior part. The screen will slide to one side revealing a keyboard, equipping it with an aspect similar to the one of a small laptop. As far as navigation by Internet and the use of applications, it’s been thought and it optimized to use those of Google, like Google Maps, its search engine, YouTube or the electronic mail Gmail.

“Android” will also “borrow” ideas from the iPhone or Mobile Windows. For example, it will be possible to cut and paste text as in the Microsoft software and is developing a platform for content download similar to the AppStore, although in this case everything will be free. This will be called the Android Market.
To Google is today the leader of the market of internet advertising, with an income of 16,500 million dollars only in 2007. T-Mobile will profit from the device, not only with the sales, but also through its online partner company Amazon.com, that, with a service that allows to download content to the T-Mobile G1. Together with the telephone launch more than six million songs will be available.

Apple Iphone Gps Review

The first thing I’d like to talk about briefly is the GPS System. The new iPhone now offers it ... good luck getting lost.

Honestly, what do you think? Can this state of the art cell phone replace a complete navigation system? That'd be way cool but here's what I notice about it.

1.) The GPS navigation is running off Google Maps. That isn't at all a bad thing, because I happen to like Google Maps. If you want to update the maps, you'll need either Wi-Fi or Data Service.

2.) The GPS happens to work without a network connection and it caches your information. Basically, cache means that the information you're viewing is being duplicated and stored elsewhere. Therefore, the data is retrievable. For example, I'm in Chicago, I bring up a map. I look at stuff. I close the map, re-open ... BAM! All the stuff I looked previously is still there if I need it. It really saves time and headaches in certain situations.

3.) Take out your navigation system and have it lock on your location. How long does it take? Answer? To long ... The Apple iPhone takes what seems to be a few seconds. Re-read what I just said. It only takes a few seconds...
w00t!

4.) Okay, it can't be 100% perfect, so I’ll go on and get the bad point out of the way. It does not automatically re-route you if you miss your exit. So ... it just assumes we're all paying attention all the time.

5.) This GPS system shows your traffic information. Yes, I really just said that. It shows traffic information. Okay ... it only shows what's going on with the highways and it isn't real time. But still ... That flippin' rox my sox.

Okay, that’s all I’m rambling about with that. Does it talk to you? Nah. But what good is that? Remember that State Farm commercial where the guy is driving his car and clearly enjoying his day. The navigation says, "Turn left, then you have reached your destination" ... where did he end up? Inside a coffee shop. His car, in a coffee shop. Hahaha! That's funny stuff.

Bottom line. This is an impressive GPS system but I wouldn't opt my in car GPS out for it. The maps are up to date which is hardcore, but if caching mode is off, then you do need a network connection. So, leave it on.

Whether To Get Imat Protection For Your Iphone

After a few months, is your iPhone starting to lose its attractive sleek appearance? Are you worried about getting it out in public because of the stares you might get? I know none of us mean to scratch our phones, but we can't help it. When you leave it in your handbag or in your pocket with the loose change it gets scratched. It might be time to get iMat protection for your iPhone.

We all have the invisible shields for the protection of the iPhone front surface. It does cause fewer scratches. Even if you have picked up the odd scratch or two here or there, when you put the shield on, it does make them disappear slightly. But the back gets scratched. He still seemed skeptical about the iMat. 'What about a case then?' I said. But he does not like cases. I know some people get along famously with them, but he is not one of those guys who drops things too much and doesn't need that stiff protection. He shrugged his shoulders: 'I just don't like them'. He said.

So, he had to do something! I talked him out of coloring the back in with a felt tip pen! And he can't quite afford the gold plating yet, so he finally agreed to buy an iMat. They are so cheap. If you don't like it, you don't have to use it.

Anyway, he showed me his phone later that week and it looked amazing. When he first got his iMat, I thought it didn't look like much, but it changes the whole thing. It grips onto the back of the phone very well and gives it that lovely new leather smell. The texture makes it easier to hold the phone as well.

The leather can be removed really easily if you change your mind. You can stick it to the back of the phone and it slightly covers the sides and corners. The leather is only a few millimeters thick so it does not detract from the original look and feel of the phone. It is a perfect solution to the scratching problem by adding an elegant accessory. You can make your iPhone look much better.

What You Need To Unleash The Hidden Potential Of Your Beloved Iphone

The users of digital media appliances swear by the superiority of the Apple products. The ease of use and unmatched features that Apple products offer remain unbeatable. Many times its products have set a new trend in the market. A few years back Apple stunned the world by launching iPhone.

The iPhone is the product from the stable of Apple that introduced the concept of Touch screen driven phones. It took the market by storm after its arrival and other leading manufacturers also hurried up to introduce their own version of touch screen phones. However a complaint the consumers have about Apple is that the company normally does not allow the third party manufacturers to release accessories and software for its products.

A classic example is its award winning line up of Macintosh computers that are driven by Apple’s proprietary Mac OS series. However the biggest grudge against the iPhone was that it literally forces a buyer to stick to the service provider that sells the phone in a country. This is true of the latest 3G iPhone as well.

The iPhone users often search the internet for finding applications that will give them more liberty in using the device. There is a company that has invented simple yet powerful software for unlocking the iPhone. One needs to visit the site Iphone-Unlockers.net to understand what benefits he can get by using the iPhone unlocking software.

Download Free Iphone Movies

If you are among the thousands of people looking to download free Iphone movies, hopefully this article will be of some use to you. The Iphone's popularity already seems set to eclipse that of the Ipod. Apple cemented their place in history with the Ipod, and by all indications look like they will be even more popular due to their latest breakthrough, the Iphone.

For reasons as yet unknown, it's not currently possible to download movies or anything else directly onto the Iphone itself, instead, you will first need to download them to a computer and then transfer them across. This means you will of course need to have the use of a computer, and also an internet connection. Any fairly modern computer should be fine, and as far as the internet connections goes, the usual rule still applies - the faster the better!

The toughest thing about downloading Iphone movies is knowing where to get them from. True, you could get them from Itunes, and Apple are rumored to be working on a native version of Itunes which will work on the Iphone itself and allow download of media while on the move. This will be pretty cool, but just like regular Itunes will probably cost you a fortune.

To combat this cost issue, many people currently use the file sharing or bit torrent sites to get their downloads from. This can seem good, as it's very cost effective, but unfortunately you are breaking the law when you use these sites. That's not even the worst part; torrent sites like this have no way of monitoring who uploads what, which makes them a real hacker's playground. This is bad news as it means that sites like this are often the first places to begin the spread of new viruses and malware etc. The hackers simply upload their latest virus and name it as something currently popular. The downloader has no way of knowing what they are getting until it is too late.

Not all sites are like this though, over the last year or so a healthier alternative has made itself known. There are now a few sites around where you can join their membership for a small fee and then get unlimited access to their downloads. These sites prove far safer and offer excellent value, and would definitely be recommended for their high speed and wide range.

The Art Of Double Tapping Your Iphone Screen: The Iphone's Best Trick

Finally, you have the time to sit back, relax and watch a movie on your iPhone. But you noticed that the screen is showing a letterbox image. This is when there are two black lines under and above the picture, which gives you a wider view. You want to watch the movie in full screen mode so you played around and you finally figured out on how to view it in full screen but it took you a while. You could have saved your time, if only you knew the art of double tapping your iPhone screen – the iPhone's best trick!

You can easily view the movie in full screen version by simply double tapping the screen. However, the full screen version may cut off the words if you're watching a movie with subtitle. To turn your screen back to letterbox view, just double tap your iPhone screen again.
Yes, the iPhone's user interface is definitely one of the best and most leading edge features of the iPhone. Nothing compares to the amazing user experience that the Apple iPhone can give. When the Apple iPhone arrived without the handy stylus or a hard keyboard, many were bothered... but not until they have uncovered one of the iPhone's best tricks, the art of double tapping your iPhone screen.

Although getting familiar with the iPhone's cool applications and great features can be easy as 1-2-3, many people still have missed the trick because they have not taken the time to learn the secrets of their iPhone. To help you with this issue, here's the trick.

Generally, double tapping means zooming into whatever you tapped on your iPhone screen. If you are viewing pictures, video, web page, or email the double tap will zoom in. To zoom back out, just double tap again. If you are viewing the map then the double tap will keep zooming in to a more and more detailed view. And a two-fingered double tap will zoom back out. You can also magnify an image by just double tapping it.

For an instance, you want to have a larger view of a picture on a web page. The picture can be magnified two times its default size by just double tapping it. And double tap again to return the picture to its size.

The Double Tap is an extension of the single tap. You may think that to double tap a single item on your iPhone screen will rarely be needed, because every icon and link on the interface seems to react with a simple one-tap motion. However, interfaces like in Photos, Video, Movies and Maps do react to double-tapping differently than if you were to only tap the screen once.

Iphone Voip Functionality Trade-offs

The iPhone can use the internet through Wi-Fi technology, however there are some terms of service that state; customers are not allowed to use the 3G internet technology to access the Voice over IP calls.

A company named Global IP Solutions is planning to release a VoIP software development kit that will help in the creation of more simple VoIP programs and also add VoIP functionality to the already existing programs. For instance; playing games where the ghosts are other players strategizing in real time or additionally the iPhone is packed with a GPS-triangulated chat room this not only allows you to ask others where they are and if they would like to meet you up for a spontaneous date.

After the introduction to the market of the SDK iPhone, it raised a few future possibilities that the device can use the VoIP functionality, specifically according to Steve Jobs a specialist; if the application is not using the mobile carrier's network then it will be allowed. The SDK iPhone agreement to the stated is that if an application does require or that it will have access to the carrier network, then such an application will not have Voice over the Internet Protocol Calls. This means that if you want to have access to the VoIP over the carrier network, then you must apply to be given the authority to do so. If you are granted the authority then the said application does not use the cell network for anything.

Global IP Solutions is not the only company working on developing such ideas, but by offering a VoIP SDK to developers, it will make VoIP integration easier for the smaller developer who only has knowledge in one specific area.

The only problem is that these VoIP functions are within some specified terms of service and that all the resulting applications will still need to be approved. If manufacturers get paranoid about VoIP competition then we will definitely see that there is a lot that they will produce that can attract the customers.

According to analysts at vision gain, the release of apple branded iPod mobile phones is inevitable and that it is logical. It is believed that apple products are embracing technological advancements and at a faster rate too. The analysts believe that apple products are opening business in virtual mobile phones network operator and also hiring bandwidth from existing network operators. The above findings are contained in vision gain's report.

The report further looks at the failed partnership and Motorola which the analysts called the lowest common thing that compromised the strength of Apple.

Also predictable by analysts is that Apple will embrace mobile fully and thus it will directly pose a threat to the mobile industry as a virtual network and also a mobile handset manufacturer. It also is reiterated that the soon to be launched United States of America network, Helio is another entry point for the iPhone.

It is believed that it is possible that Apple will add Voice over Internet Protocol calls and this is a threat to the already existing companies.

In January 16, 2009, there are over 15,000 third-party applications officially available for the iPhone and iPod touch on the App Store.

Finding the best cell phone plan is one requirement in choosing cell phones intelligently. That’s why people nowadays can choose the best deal of gadget which can make them available all the time everywhere with the best features all in one on iPhone.

Iphone Screen Replacement Instructions

One of the most complex repairs on an iPhone is a screen replacement repair, before you attempt this repair be sure to have sufficient time to complete the task, and have a clear working space for your iPhone and the replacement screen to sit in while working on them.

For a replacement screen repair it is necessary to completely disassemble the iPhone, therefore I would suggest that prior to commencing the repair get a few small pieces of paper in order to label your parts, and I particular the origin of the screws. Label them as follows; Metal Back Screws, aluminum back case, and motherboard – lay them out on the workspace in this order with a small space between them for the other iPhone components and replacement screen to lie in.

The tools and equipment required for this repair are; a case opener, a small Phillips screwdriver, a paperclip to eject the SIM tray and the iPhone replacement screen, once you have these to hand and the paper labels lined up. Be sure to have clean hands before starting the repair.

Firstly remove the SIM tray – do this by inserting the paper clip in the hole on the topside of the iPhone next to the power button, when the clip is inserted, the SIM tray should eject. Next, use the case opener to remove the plastic back of the iPhone. Lay these two components next to the paper labels, after you have fitted the replacement screen into your iPhone you will need to reverse the order of these instructions to reassemble the iPhone. For this reason, I would suggest placing them furthest from you next to the aluminum paper label.

The next step is to remove the two small screws on either side of the back securing the metal casing, and another screw located top, middle of where you removed the plastic back – placing these on the paper label. Once you have completed this, take the case opener again and carefully run it along both sides of the iPhone to loosen the back away from the frame – you will notice the metal back is secured by a wire ribbon, carefully detach this from the main section of the Iphone, not the metal back end.

The next step in the screen replacement repair needs caution – it is required to remove the iPhone antenna cable, secured by glue in three positions, carefully pry it loose of the glue spots. After this, you will need to remove 10 screws from around the sides of the iPhone, and place them on the paper label ‘Outside Case’ – after this remove the 3 screws securing the motherboard. You need to remove the motherboard at the same time as the battery as they are soldered together, once you have done this you can carefully detach the remaining iPhone frame.

The next step is to remove the LCD screen in order to fit the replacement screen – this is possibly the most difficult part of the repair and needs to be done with extreme caution. Loosen the 3 clips on the sides of the screen and slowly begin removing the LCD, you will see some wires are intertwined into the Iphone – carefully guide them through the frame and, they will slide right through.

Once you have completed this, take the iPhone screen replacement and insert it into the phone, carefully trace your steps to ensure that no errors are made when assembling the iPhone back to its original state.

How to restore iPhone App Store data from a backup

As I had a hard time figuring this out, this hint may be of help to others coming into the same situation...

I had a number of kernel panics due to a bad RAM stick. By the time I figured this out, my iTunes library file was damaged; iTunes built me a new one. However, when I plugged in my iPhone, it lost all the applications from the App Store, along with their data.

Restoring the applications was easy, as the files were still in ~/Music » iTunes » Mobile Applications. One just has to drag them into the iTunes window, with Applications selected from the sidebar. On the next iPhone sync, iTunes copied them onto the iPhone.

However, all the application settings and data were still missing. The up-to-date backup was of no help. One has to resort to an older backup from Time Machine or another backup system. The procedure is as follows:

1. Disable automatic syncing in the iTunes preferences under Devices.

2. Replace ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/abc123 with an older version from Time Machine. Note that abc123 is a very long alphanumeric key identifying to your iPhone -- make sure you get the right one, in case you sync with several phones or iPods.

3. Plug in the iPhone.

4. Control-click (in the iTunes sidebar) on the iPhone and choose Restore from Backup. At the end of the process, your iPhone will automatically restart.

You should be done at this point. Don't forget to turn automatic syncing back on (in iTunes preferences).

iStat for iPhone feeds your Mac stat obsession

We got a sneak peek at iStat for iPhone in July last year. iStat is an app that allows iPhone owners to keep an eye on a Mac's stats from afar. Now Bjango (formerly iSlayer), the company known for making incredibly useful Dashboard widgets and iPhone software, has released the app in the App Store.

For a quick recap, iStat for iPhone (iTunes Link) brings much of the system monitoring utility you are (or should be) familiar with from Bjango's Dashboard widgets. After installing the small iStat Server app available freely from Bjango, iStat for iPhone allows you to remotely monitor your Mac's CPU, disk activity, network usage, component temperatures, uptime, and more. As a bonus, it also displays iPhone stats like memory, disk space, WiFi and Cell IP address, uptime and load averages. It even offers one-tap buttons for e-mailing an iPhone's Unique ID (also known as a UDID), MAC address, or both at the same time.

If all this monitoring has you concerned about privacy and bandwidth, though, you should be able to rest easy tonight. When we spoke with Marc Edwards last year for our sneak preview, he explained that Bjango held bandwidth consumption as a top priority. Even back then, iStat for iPhone was optimized to use less than 1MB per hour when left running continuously. To top it all off, iStat Server allows for setting a password to further protect access to stats from your Mac.

I personally haven't had a chance to use iStat for iPhone yet, but it looks gorgeous and costs just $1.99 from the App Store. We at Ars have a review coming very soon, though, so keep an eye out for it in the next few days.

Apple rejects South Park iPhone App

Although Steve Jobs hasn't killed Kenny (yet!), his company, Apple, has killed the idea of a South Park iPhone app due to "potentially offensive" material. Of course, the iTunes store has no problem selling Seasons 1-12 of the animated show uncensored, as well as the South Park movie, which boasts a Guinness Book record for most uses of profanity in an animated movie with a total of 399 profane words and 199 offensive gestures.

This isn't the first app to be rejected by Apple based on its loose and indefinable standards of impropriety. According to PC World, the iPhone "currently sells 50 flatulence or flatulence-related apps" and in "just one day last December, Apple approved 14 such apps." In addition to its assortment of fart apps, there's iVomit, Zit Picker, Burp Box and many other apparently inoffensive bodily function apps.

There is also a list of the top 10 rejections from Apple. Many of the apps on the list are political in nature, but hardly seem overly offensive. One was a countdown clock until the end of the Bush administration, and one involved bouncing politicians on a trampoline to pop balloons. Other apps that got the boot involved violence, but no more violence than existing apps provided.

Finally, some (and by "some," we mean, "some random commenters on Digg," so maybe take this with a grain of salt) are saying that the reason for the rejection of South Park's app isn't because of objectionable content, but rather because it would give iPhone users free access to content from which Apple would otherwise get a cut. Perhaps a wag of the finger is in order?

Apple vs The Others

Last week’s announcement from Apple that they will no longer continue to provide content from NBC shows that yet another swing to dethrone Apple as the leader in the purchased online media market has come along. Make no mistake about it; this thing with NBC was more than simply an attempt by another company trying to enforce their will on Apple.

It was a chess move designed towards ultimately obtaining control over how iTunes is run, therefore eventually taking controlling power away from Apple. We could’ve slowly seen Apple lose more and more control over “their iTunes” by giving in to the ridiculous demands of these media giants. I applaud Apple for refusing to raise their prices from $1.99 to $4.99 per NBC show download. Their commitment to the consumer on this matter will only feed the ever-growing monster that is the iTunes faithful customer base. Millions and millions of iPod owners call iTunes home and now our beloved iPhone is thrown into the mix.

As long as Apple continues to protect those of us that will heavily rely on iTunes content to fill our devices, Apple will maintain its stranglehold on the downloaded media market. Apple knows the competition is only going to get heavier and the bucking of the system by some of the current media giants, as what we saw this week by NBC and previously from its parent company Universal, will not be the last. Apple is clearly defining where its loyalty lies early on. Don’t get me wrong, I know Apple is thinking of their bottom line first and foremost but they haven’t ignored us in the process as many other companies have done in the past.

Here is what I think could happen. Apple has aggressively increased their product development, market presence and market share over the last 18-24 months. They have shown time and time again over that period that they are establishing a forward thinking mentality for the company. One that will re-establish Apple’s presence to what it was B.W. (before Windows). They are going to overcome this challenge in a manner that will benefit Apple but also not alienate

Cupertino’s greatest asset, us. Beyond the iMac, MacBook Pro, and yes even the iPhone, Apple is most concerned about us and where we take our money.

So fret not my fellow iTunes users, we will continue to see Apple bring us interesting and desirable downloadable content to spend our hard-earned money on. If not from NBC then from someone else who will gladly step right into the space on our iTunes menu that was previously occupied by NBC.

Google Earth for the iPhone and iPod touch

Google Earth for the iPhone and iPod touch is the mobile version of Google’s justly acclaimed desktop app. Like its desktop-based counterpart, the mobile version offers a birds-eye, 3-D view of the earth, allowing you to zoom, via satellite photos, from Paris to New York to (literally) your own backyard. And since its debut on the App Store, the iPhone version of Google Earth has won rave reviews for the way it puts the whole world on your mobile device.

Look, I like the iPhone edition of Google Earth… to a point. It’s fun to go swooshing from one locale to another, and the ability to search for nearby businesses can come in handy if you’re a stranger in a strange land. But it’s a rough transition from the desktop to the iPhone, and Google Earth has lost some of the functionality that makes it such a pleasure to use on the Mac. Then again, the mobile version of Google Earth would do well just to match the functionality of the Maps app that comes included with the iPhone or iPod touch.

Here’s how the app works. You can type in a location after tapping the search icon in the upper left corner of the screen; tap the location button in the lower left corner, and Google Earth will find your current locale anywhere on the planet, highlighting it with a bright blue dot. The standard touchscreen gestures work in Google Earth—double-tapping lets you zoom in as does a two-finger reverse pinch, while pinching the screen lets you zoom out. Drag your finger in any direction, and Google Earth will follow.

Google Earth orients itself based on how you’re holding your mobile device; turn the phone sideways for a horizontal view of the map. The app also takes advantage of the accelerometer by tilting the screen as you tilt your iPhone or iPod touch. It’s certainly a cool way of getting something other than a top-down view of an area, but I found that even a slight twitch of my hands would cause the map to tilt unexpectedly and keep tilting as I over-corrected my grip. I wound up turning the autotilt feature off by tapping the settings button in the lower right corner of the screen.

Once you’re fixed on a location, you can search the surrounding area for businesses or points of interest. Tap on the search icon again, and type out a search query—“restaurants,” say. A series of labeled circles will pop up on the screen showing you all the restaurants in your immediate vicinity. Tap on one of those circles, and you’ll get an address, a URL, reviews from assorted Web sites (if applicable), and, in many cases, a phone number. While tapping the phone number did give me the option of initiating a call, tapping any of the Web page links on the page didn’t seem to do anything. Tapping an Open in Safari button launched Maps, of all things.
Unlike the desktop version, the iPhone’s Google Earth doesn’t include driving directions. You can get them, but you’ll have to drill down to that Google search results page to launch the Maps app. That will take you out of Google Earth, which seems like a lot of effort to go through for a feature that probably should have been included in the mobile effort.

Typing search terms in Google Earth has its pluses and minuses. The app is tied into your contacts, so if you start typing a name, the contact will appear as it does in Google Mobile App, saving you from having to tap out the entire name. Unlike Google Mobile App, Google Earth does not bring up suggested or common search terms as you type. If you want to look up nearby restaurants, you’re going to have to pound out each blessed letter—at least for the first time you search. Google Earth does remember previous searches, however, so if you’ve searched for restaurants or ATMs or other generic businesses in the past, they’ll appear as you start to retype them. There’s a caveat, though—you have to tap the existing search term twice to actually perform a search. Tapping once merely highlights the term, and if you then hit the Search button, Google Earth will look up your partially typed search term instead. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve searched for “rest” or “r” when I thought I was looking up nearby restaurants, but it doesn’t get any less annoying when it happens.

While Google Earth on the iPhone remembers previous searches, it doesn’t allow you to add placemarks or pinpoints in the same way that you can store favorite places on the desktop app. This is a very significant omission that diminishes the usability of the mobile version.
Another difference between the desktop and mobile iterations of Google Earth is the limited number of layers available for the latter. On the desktop version, you can choose to show street names, places of interest, traffic, or other layers created by the vibrant Google Earth community. It’s one of the things that makes the desktop version so appealing.

The iPhone version of Google Earth lets you turn Borders and Labels and Terrain layers on and off. Its only other layers are limited to Wikipedia entries and geo-located photos from Panoramio. Tapping on either a Wikipedia entry’s W icon or the blue box designating a Panoramio photo opens either of those screens within Google Earth. But there’s no way to tell what’s on the other end of that icon or whether it’s worth your time until you tap on it—you’re forced to hunt and peck. Also, in popular locales like the Vegas strip or Disneyland, photo and Wikipedia icons can be layered on top of one another; even zooming in for a closer look doesn’t always provide enough separation for those of us with meaty fingertips so some icons wind up being untappable.

I realize that shrinking Google Earth down to size for a mobile device requires some sacrifices. I surely don’t expect to be able to install a KML file that allows me to superimpose defunct National League baseball parks on a map, as I can with the desktop version. But some layers are more than just eye candy—street names, for example. As you’re scrolling and tilting and zooming your way through a Google Earth map on your iPhone, it’s easy to lose your orientation without a street name layer to guide you.

With its location and search capabilities, Google Earth could be a valuable tool if you find yourself in a strange city and need to track down an eatery, ATM, or tourist attraction in your immediate area. Still, while Google Earth offers an undeniable Gee Whiz factor, Maps seems like an infinitely more usable tool. It gives you street names, driving directions, traffic conditions in some cases, and even street views if you happen to be using an iPhone. The views in Google Earth are certainly eye-catching, but they can’t match what Maps offers in terms of practical value.
I suppose it comes down to what you expect Google Earth to be. On the desktop, the answer is “whatever you want,” thanks to the variety of layers, the multiple search options, and the ability to customize the app any way you see fit. The iPhone version is decidedly more limited. Users who merely want to zoom around the globe from the comfort of their mobile device will find plenty to like here, and certainly, there's a value to that. But does that make for an indispensible? Not from my vantage point.

Make Your iPhone Battery Last Longer

Most of the mobile phones use litium-ion battery. The Apple made iPhone also uses a same standard and frequently rechargeable lithium-ion dry battery. In Apple ipod battery is not removable or replaceable. Therefore it is essential that a great care be taken to preserve battery condition in the best possible available way. Because battery cannot be replace by an ordinary technician so an expert can only replace the iPhone battery. Replacement of iPhone battery is an expensive affair; it normally cost $80 to 200 to get it replaced. A great care is needed to extend the life of iPhone battery to enjoy utility of it.

There are few basic guidelines, which help us to keep our battery safe. First and foremost rule to protect a battery is to keep it away from moistures environment. Do not drop it and lend in different people hands. Never keep the battery for overcharging and on exhaustive discharging condition. If there are any symptoms of malfunctioning of the iPhone, consult an expert without a self-fiddling. These batteries and sets are very sensitive and fragile, it is advised to handle the iPhone with a single hand.

An iPhone battery can be made durable by taking these precautions. A lithium ion battery is a standard and high quality battery, which can easily be made to be used for a few years if a proper care and precautions is taken. There is no such battery, which can last forever; it just means that a care makes battery to last longer. Heat is a plague for a lithium battery so it should be avoided in all conditions. Intense ionization takes place in the lithium battery and heat destroys its ability of ionization. Instructions are given in the iPhone booklet to avoid the continuous exposure of iPhone to the sunlight. The battery will be sufficiently hot to get destroyed in few hours.

There are the examples that in the after noon sun light has severely damaged iPhone battery. Leaving battery in the car exposed to sunlight can also damage the battery. Always make sure that standard charger supplied with the set charges iPhone battery. It will not only ensure you iPhone's warranty, but also keep the iPhone safe from damage. Lithium-ion batteries need to be charged with an accurate charging rate and smooth voltage without any interruptions. Local chargers won't provide the regulated voltage, which can slowly degrade the quality of the iPhone battery. Avoid charging iPhone battery in vehicle. These chargers are not accurate and charge the battery quickly, and it adversely affects the battery. Although Apple has developed few vehicle chargers, but these chargers are not as good as a charger provided with original equipment manufacturer. It's true; a little care makes an accident rare.

What Accessories to Buy for Your Apple Iphone 3g?

The Necessities
Apple's iPhone 3G – Obviously you’re buying the phone. Not much to decide here, except how much storage you want and whether you want to a white or black one. Always buy as much storage as you can afford, since the phone will last you longer and will hold more music, data, and programs like games.

iPhone 3G Case – After spending hundreds of dollars on your new phone, you don’t want to risk scratching it, or damaging it more seriously, by not protecting it. Get a case to prevent scratches to the phone and absorb shocks from jostling and drops. More Cases:

* iPhone 3G Crystal Cases
* iPhone 3G Back Cover Cases
* iPhone 3G Leather Cases
* iPhone 3G Silicon Cases
* iPhone 3G Socks

iPhone 3G Screen protector – The iPhone has been touted since before the release of the original model as having a strongly scratch-resistant screen. Unfortunately, that’s been proven not to be the case. The screen of the iPhone 3G also picks up smudges from the oil on fingers and faces very easily, making the screen constantly look kind of dirty. Protect the iPhone 3G’s very appealing screen with a thin, plastic overlay screen protector.

Recommended
You don’t absolutely need these things when buying an iPhone 3G, but you may enjoy your phone more with them.

iPhone 3G Charger – The iPhone 3G comes with a Sync data cable and an USB wall charger adapter for recharging the battery. In most cases, you could need a car charger or a 3-in-1 Car & Wall Charger with Data Cable Kit while on the road or traveling.

iPhone 3G Stylus Pen – Stylus made from special materials designed specifically for touch screen phones, will let you type faster and with greater accuracy.

iPhone 3G Extended Warranty – The iPhone 3G comes with a 2-year phone support, 1-year hardware support warranty, but you’re probably going to have your phone a lot longer than that. Extending the warranty to a total of two years for all kinds of support – probably the life of an iPhone, or close to it (will you be able to resist upgrading before that?) – will cost you just US$6/month.

iPhone 3G App Store Programs – The key appeal of the iPhone 2.0 software that the iPhone 3G runs on is its support for the App Store, Apple’s repository of official third-party programs such as games, blogging tools, and productivity aides. While the iPhone itself is great, expanding its functionality with App Store programs will make it infinitely more fun. Most programs range from free to US$9.99. Learn more about the App Store

Extras
Check out these accessories if you plan some specific uses for your iPhone 3G.

iPhone 3g Cradle & Dock – While not a strict necessity, some people prefer to stand their iPhones up in one of these little plastic stands while syncing. The first-generation iPhone came with a dock, but Apple now sells them separately.

iPhone 3G Car Mount & Car Kit – You would probably want to use your iPhone while in oyur car or RV or boat, get a car mount to easily connect to your car stereo. You should definitely consider getting a car charger if the item does not come with one.

iPhone 3G Headsets/Headphones – Though the headphones that come with the iPhone 3G are perfectly serviceable – and include a way to use the phone – you may want a higher-quality means to listen to your music on the go. Headsets also serves as a Send/End button, for answering and ending of iPhone calls, and it even controls basic music playback.

Weather Resistant iPhone Cases

One of the most requested accessories for the iPhone is the weather proof case. The importance of having an iPhone case that is weather proofed is extremely high, mainly because the iPhone does not have extreme amounts of protection. While it is an amazing phone with incredible capabilities, it is quite vulnerable to the elements. Thus, if you are stuck in a rain storm, you may find that your iPhone is not completely safe by simply resting in your pocket.

If you live in a city that gets decent amount of rain, or if you simply want to protect your iPhone from the outside world, than you will want to purchase an iPhone weather-proofed case. But what are the best cases for this type of protection?

If you have searched the marketplace for weather resistant iPhone cases, than you have probably noticed that many of them are bulky and, quite frankly, unattractive, while this may be true for many weather resistant iPhone cases, it isn't the truth for all of them. There is one case that is stunning, both in its appearance and also in its ability to protect your iPhone from the harshness of Mother Earth. This iPhone case is the OtterBox Defender Series, which is a smart and rugged case that will add a certain style to your iPhone. This case still allows you to have full interaction with every feature of your iPhone, including pictures, all while giving you true water-resistant technology.

It doesn't matter what type of iPhone that you currently have, whether it be the 4GB model or the 8GB model, they will both fit in this iPhone case. One of the coolest features about this iPhone case is the fact that it allows you to have full interaction with the iPhone screen, while still protecting it. This is made possible by a unique membrane that has been patented due to its unique ability to give you such accurate interactivity, while still giving you weather resistant protection.

Actually, you are getting three complete layers of protection within this case, which is much more than many other "weather resistant" cases. Another feature that makes this iPhone case so unique is the fact that it is completely wrapped in silicone, which has two great purposes.
The first purpose is to allow you to have a seamless grip on your iPhone, so you will be less likely to drop it while walking throughout your day. And the second reason the silicone is such a great feature is because it will protect your iPhone if you do accidently drop it. Normally if you drop your phone, you are scared to even look at it because you don't know if the screen is cracked, or if it is completely broke. However, because of the silicone you will have superior protection against accidental damage.

It should be noted though that the silence switch is not available to use when your iPhone is in this case. So, if you must silence your iPhone, it is suggested that you do so before you put it into the weather-proof case.

HTC Touch HD vs Apple iPhone 3G

Apple faces stiff competition from HTC as the Taiwan-based mobile phone powerhouse introduced the HTC Touch HD smartphone.

For a long time, the Apple iPhone 3G smartphone dominated the high end touchscreen mobile phone market with its huge 3.5 inch WVGA display screen. This is a pioneering technology of Apple especially with its ultra high resolution display quality and very intuitive user interface.

However, HTC puts the competition a notch higher by introducing a smartphone that matches the size and quality of Apple's WVGA touchscreen display. You now have two high end options when buying a widescreen smartphone.

The Race towards Better Touchscreen Display

HTC Touch HD offers wider touchscreen at 3.8 inches which totally dominates the facade of this mobile phone. This type of design is common in Apple iPhone 3G smartphone. That is why you cannot help but compare HTC's smartphone from iPhone.

However, the bigger screen and display size of the HTC mobile phone will certainly pose a serious problem for Apple as consumers tend to favor wider mobile phone screens.

Both mobile phones have ultra high quality WVGA screen resolutions. HTC can provide brighter and crispier VGA screen display under normal lighting conditions. On the other hand, Apple's 3G iPhone can outperform HTC when used under bright sunlight.

Digital Camera and Multimedia Features

HTC Touch HD takes the cake away from iPhone 3G when it comes to their built-in digital camera features. iPhone 3G has a 2 megapixel standard phone camera. It has no autofocus feature and lacks a built-in flash. The digital camera of Apple iPhone 3G would be ideal for non-critical snapshots and should be used on bright environments.

On the other hand, HTC offers a 5 megapixel digital camera which is a first of its kind in the HTC smartphone line. The digital camera of HTC also features smart autofocus and a built-in camera flash. With such powerful features, you can use your smartphone as a real Digicam to produce superior quality images.

Processing Speed and Phone Memory Performance

Apple's iPhone edges HTC on this aspect. iPhone 3G has a 620 megahertz ARM central processing unit. You can also choose the phone memory power between 8 gigabytes and 16 gigabytes. These system features can provide faster data processing, high speed connectivity, and lots of storage space.

HTC Touch on the other hand works with a Qualcomm 528 megahertz processor. It has a 288 MB internal memory and a 512 MB ROM. If you want more storage space, you can add a 4 GB Micro SD card on it. HTC also runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system which can be surpassed by the iPhone operating system.

Web and Wireless Connectivity Features

HD Touch and iPhone 3G support multiple high speed networks to connect to web. Both can work on HSDPA, GPRS, and Quadband GSM. iPhone however can use EDGE network which is surprisingly absent in the HTC smartphone.

HD Touch and Apple iPhone 3G are two of the most advanced smartphones today. It is up to you to decide which high end mobile would be suitable for your needs.

iPhone Unlocking - Cat and Mouse Game

Giant companies, Apple and AT&T, have both been working hard to find ways to keep the iPhone technology exclusive to just the 2 companies. Right from the beginning, the Apple iPhone was meant to be for AT&T customers only. This was, and still is, part of their business strategy to acquire market share, and to prevent competitors to enter into the space.

The problem with this strategy is that it's not very popular among iPhone fans. The deal meant that an individual cannot use the iPhone with any other carrier except AT&T. So that leaves thousands of consumers in the marketplace stranded - i.e. they can't buy the iPhone unless they switch carrier.

However, it wasn't long before someone discovered a way to unlock the 2G iPhone. Soon, software was released to perform similar functions. The development team became so efficient that they are able to release software that can be installed with a few simple clicks.

For sure, Apple and AT&T business executives wouldn't be too happy about that. But due to sheer demand, it is almost impossible to stop iPhone fans from unlocking their iPhones. It's something like buying your own computer but you are forced to use a proprietary operating system. To the fans, that meant a loss of freedom. They want the iPhone badly, but they also want the freedom to use it with any carrier that they want.

The unlocking solutions came along rather nicely, and thousands of iPhone fans flocked to unlocking websites to see if they can unlock their iPhones.

Before long, the 3G iPhones were released. Many were speculating over whether the new generation of 3G would be unlockable. They didn't have to wait long to find out the answer. Within a few short weeks, someone had found a way to unlock the 3G iPhone. This time, to the surprise of everyone, it came as a hardware unlock instead of a software unlock.

Most people would be expecting the unlocking solutions to be software based. It is more common to see developers come up with some sort of hack for software. Very few people expect the unlock solution to be hardware based. To unlock the 3G iPhone, you have to attach an additional card to the existing SIM card. The card will "fool" the iPhone into believing that it's connected to the official network, when it's actually not.

But the solution didn't last long. In recent news, it was announced that Apple released new firmware (version 2.2) that actually updates the baseband, rendering the unlock solution useless.

The baseband is like your computer modem, and it is used for internal communications. Just like your modem, you may download new firmware to get upgrades or to patch bugs.

It has been confirmed that the unlock card cannot work with the new 2.2 firmware. So fans are urged not to upgrade for the time being. They are advised to wait until the release of the next iPhone unlock solution. The game of cat and mouse continues.
